Falcon 9 Launches the First Private Swedish Geostationary Satellite

Today SpaceX launched Ovzon 3, the first privately funded and developed Swedish geostationary communications satellite on board a Falcon 9 rocket

Tonight SpaceX successfully launched and deployed a Swedish communications satellite in a Geostationary Orbit. On January 3rd at 23:04 UTC, a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off carrying the Ovzon-3 satellite. The second SpaceX’s mission of 2024 lifted off from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

Nearly two minutes after liftoff the Falcon 9 second stage separated from the first, which safely landed at Landing Zone 1 (LZ-1), six minutes later. After a first ignition (SES-1), the second stage fired again (SES-2) at T+30:27, and eight minutes later the payload was released at an apogee of 36,000 km. This was the 10th flight for the booster used in this mission (B1076).

With two launches in three days, SpaceX seems to point the way toward a substantial increase in the frequency of launches for this year. In 2024 Elon Musk’s company aims to launch 144 orbital missions, a far superior number compared to the 2023 record of 96 Falcon 9’s launches.

Ovzon services

Ovzon is a Swedish telecommunications company founded in 2006. The company offers world-leading mobile satellite communications services through its SATCOM-As-A-Service, which provides high data speed and high mobility across the globe. Ovzon’s service meets the growing needs of customers with high performance and security requirements such as Defense, Emergency Services, NGOs, Media, and Commercial organizations. Ozvon 3 is the company’s first satellite.

Ovzon offers three different satellite terminals (Ovzon T7, T6, and OTM mini), and secures the connection to its satellite network thanks to three SATCOM-as-a-Service plans:

  • Ovzon Orion: Exclusively available on the Ovzon T7 and powered by the Ovzon 3 On-board Processor, this service is designed for mission-critical applications in near-peer environments, offering advanced features.
  • Ovzon Pegasus: Enabled by Ovzon 3, this service introduces a steerable beam service tailored for demanding tasks, providing flexibility and advanced capabilities to meet critical requirements.
  • Ovzon Hero: This global advanced service plan utilizes Ovzon’s satellite network, offering flexibility for customers to deploy capabilities with complete control and guaranteed throughput, ensuring optimal performance for users.

Ovzon 3

Ovzon 3 was firstly scheduled to be launched in 2021, but due to several development delays, and after having changed the launch provider two times, the liftoff slipped to January 2024.

Ovzon 3 stands out as a revolutionary satellite communication capability, incorporating two key technologies. Firstly, it features the most powerful steerable spot beams in space, with five independent beams dynamically delivering optimal capacity. This ensures a unique combination of power density and antenna receive performance in orbit.

Secondly, Ovzon 3 introduces the On-Board-Processor (OBP), a disruptive technology providing unprecedented resiliency. The OBP is a sophisticated in-orbit processing platform connecting deployed terminals across multiple beams when traditional teleports are compromised. Ovzon 3’s distinctive features enhance the efficiency and performance of existing terminals and drive innovation towards more compact, smartphone-like satellite terminals, consistently outperforming competitors in terms of weight and performance. In the next years, Ozvom aims to launch other satellites to enhance its global coverage.
